How to add a new pet to your family

Adoptions take place on a first-come, first-served basis for walk-in traffic, beginning at 11 AM. Depending on the volume of patrons each day, adoption services may be limited especially during the later hours of the day.
When you arrive, you may browse the adoption area for a pet, or if you have an animal in mind, please note the animal ID# andyou'll be able to speak with an adoption counselor.
Please note, patronssometimes line up early outside before we opento meet a pet, especially during fee-waived adoption events.
We do not place holds on pets.
Please do not bring your current pets with you to the shelter.We do not allow in-shelter dog-to-dog introductions. The shelter is a strange and stressful place for most pets and does not provide an accurate indication of how the animals will act in a home environment. The most successful dog-to-dog introductions are properly staged outside the shelter environment. We provide step-by-step instructions on how to properly introduce your new pet to resident pet(s).

Adopters Welcome
Here at The Animal Foundation, our Adoptions Department approaches adopting our homeless pets in need with an open end approach philosophy inspired by the coined term 'Adopters Welcome' by The Humane Society of the United States. Some ways that The Animal Foundation embodies this philosophy is by removing outdated barriers for our community to adopt such as but not limited to:

Adoption Counselors are educators first, and we strive to provide proper education on responsible pet ownership rather than turning away the uneducated. We strive to help place more pets in need into loving homes with Adopters Welcome by welcoming all members of our community and eliminating unnecessary barriers that deter adopters come into shelters to adopt.
While we strive for every interested adopter that comes into our organization to adopt, we still do implement our right to deny an adoption if after conversations are had, it does not seem the adoption would be best suitable for the pet and/or adopter and will attempt to find the best course of action applicable to turn around this decision if it is found in the best interest of the adopter/pet.

The Animal Foundation's public Low-Cost Vet Clinic does not perform spay and neuter surgery on English Bulldogs, Pugs, or French Bulldogs. Please contact a full service veterinary hospital for further assistance.
Adoption fees for dogs in Las Vegas can vary depending on the shelter or rescue organization you choose to adopt from. On average, adoption fees typically range from $50 to $200. These fees often cover essential services such as spaying/neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, and initial veterinary exams.
Clark County contracts for sheltering services with The Animal Foundation. All animals that are picked up by Animal Protection Services are taken to this facility located at 655 N Mojave Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89101.
In most cases, it is best for you to keep the animal and get it to the shelter (The Animal Foundation, Boulder City Animal Shelter or Henderson Animal Shelter) so that it has a chance to be reunited with its owner.
(Many people come to a specific rescue as a referral from someone who is known by the rescue.) That being said, if it is not a person known to the rescue, they might ask for a non-family member, but usually a family member knows you best, so can provide a great reference.
You should make sure the dog's breed or mix of breeds comes with the right temperament for your lifestyle. For example, a sedentary person likely wouldn't be happy with a high-energy cattle dog. An apartment dweller wouldn't be happy with a Mastiff and might prefer a smaller dog like a Chihuahua mix.
All animals must be provided shelter and water at all times. In December of 2015, Clark County adopted an ordinance to allow for free roaming cats in the community.
Due Date. All dogs, cats and ferrets over the age of 4 months within the city limits of Las Vegas are required to be licensed with the city. New Licenses: You must purchase a license within 30 days of obtaining a dog over the age of 4 months or within 30 days of establishing residence in the city of Las Vegas.
While there, the cat can be checked for a microchip to determine whether they are someone else's missing pet. Your veterinarian can also do a thorough health examination and provide the cat with any necessary treatment or medication, depending on if they have any existing health issues.
When you report a stray dog to animal control or bring it to a shelter, the agency will initiate a holding period to allow time for the owner to claim their lost pet. The length of the holding period varies depending on local ordinances but commonly ranges from three to five days.
Check with the animal shelter, rescue or breeder where you got your pet. Some organizations require in the adoption contract that you return the pet to them if you can no longer provide care. Even if it wasn't part of your contract, the organization or breeder may be able to help you find your pet a new home.
